Abstract

Dionysius of Thrace was the proponent of anaphora, M. Maillard and R. Barthes were the forerunners of the concept of “diaphore” ®  diaphora. This is a hyperonym covering the three concepts of anaphora, cataphora and ana-cataphora. It is an extremely operating concept since it can be applied to a segment which refers both to the previous and the subsequent utterance. This notion still has the merit of not conjecturing the presence or absence of an exophoric dimension in the functioning of anaphora and cataphora. This paper aims to analyze the functioning of diaphora in the the Portuguese version of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, not in a comprehensive view, but rather treating the most illustrative examples, taking into account the type of reader and the work it is intended. In some instances it will rely on the egocentric and restricting theories of deixis.

Keywords: Dêixis; Diáfora, Anáfora; Catáfora; Ana-catáfora.
