Abstract

The following article deals with autonomy in project-based language teaching and learning. Using the example of the project ‘Agent’ which has been conducted with students and teachers of one of Polish secondary schools since 2005, the author of the paper provides evidence on the contribution of project work to the development of autonomy in a school environment. The first part of the article is theoretical in nature and presents observations and findings of different scholars and teacher-practitioners on the subjects of autonomous teaching and learning, as well as project work. In the latter part, the author concentrates on the project ‘Agent’ and enumerates the autonomous actions of educators and learners involved in such work. The author here puts forward the idea that project work is a suitable arena for implementing theoretical assumptions about autonomy development in real teaching and learning practices.

Key words: Project work; Project ‘Agent’; Development of autonomy; Autonomy of teachers and learners; Foreign language education.
