Abstract
The aim of this paper is to highlight the role of the Mission Universitaire Française (French University Mission) in the Romanian teaching process in Transylvania during the interwar period. After 1918, the German and Hungarian influence upon Transylvania declined in favour of the French model. Thus, the 1919’s Angelescu-Poincaré Convention offers legal grounds for this cooperation. The above-mentioned Mission Universitaire Française was founded. Since 1924, it was subordinated to the French Institute in Bucharest. Alongside the French Mission, the University from Cluj also played an important role.
Between 1919 and 1940, many scientific societies, cultural and artistic associations were founded. At the same time, the French language was introduced as a discipline of study in the high schools recently founded in Transylvania. In 1919, the representatives of the Mission Universitaire Française opened smaller or larger cultural French centers in the important Transylvanian cities, closely cooperating with the teachers in schools so that, in 1922, French became compulsory for the high school diploma.
In this context, Pierre Chanier, full time teacher at the Mihai Viteazul high school in Alba Iulia between 1922-1939, left his mark. He thus founded the Reading Society Les amis de la France and the Cercle Franco-Roumain, also constituting, little by little, an important French Library, organising conferences, book and photography exhibitions, spreading among intellectuals scientific, technical, cultural information through French newspapers, reviews, catalogues. Thanks to him, Alba Iulia became an important francophone centre. From 1939 to 1948, he managed the French Cultural Institute in Sibiu, the communist regime finally obliging him to leave Romania together with all the representatives of the Mission Universitaire Française.
Key words: Romania; Mission Française; Alba Iulia; Pierre Chanier; French teaching.
