Abstract

The context of the Covid-19 pandemic foregrounded the issue of organising the educational process because all educational institutions needed to adapt to a distance-learning format. However, after returning to the norm of full-time or mixed educational process, the comparison of the quality of distance and full-time education has acquired a particular character, which has led to an increase in the number of online universities. The purpose of this study is to determine the dynamics of the use and properties of distance and full-time education in the context of students’ acquisition of the English language during 2000-2020. In addition, it is necessary to consider the qualities of these two types of organisations in the educational process directly during and after the pandemic. To accomplish this, a number of scientific and methodological tools were used in the study to fully explore the issue under consideration, as well as to focus on its specific features. These tools included functional and deductive methodological approaches, methods of analysis and synthesis, comparative analyses, generalisation and the method for the analysis of scientific literature. The main results of the study provided the theoretical and practical foundations of the process of comparing the features of distance and full-time education in the period from 2000 to 2020 using the example of teaching English to students. Thus, the investigation revealed the essential content of distance and full-time learning, and analysed its effectiveness in the course of students learning English. This topic is interesting from the point of view of studying pedagogy; therefore, future research could consider the effectiveness of organising the educational process in online universities and should determine their impact on the students’ personal development. The practical value of this research lies in its relevance, as it can be used both when choosing a certain organisational form of education in universities, as well as when teachers select the correct method for teaching English.
